Review Summary:

Industry standard tools and technical specs keep BlueHost in line with the competition. Above average customer support and in-house servers and data centers set it apart.

BlueHost is one of the oldest and most reputable web hosting services available. Designed for both the small business owner and individual alike, it’s hard to go wrong with BlueHost on a number of levels, specifically customer support. BlueHost stacks up with the top web hosting services in bandwith and storage space, and surpasses the pack in customer support, but it ultimately doesn’t distance itself in additional features. Add into the mix the upfront payment format, and prospective buyers have a few distinctive decisions to make.

For small businesses looking at web hosting specs, BlueHost sticks with the pack as far as bandwidth is concerned, offering the (now standard) package of unlimited bandwidth and storage space, as well as email accounts and subdomains. This certainly isn’t a bad thing, as the industry standard is filled with unlimiteds. Additional tools are available such as traffic analysis, Webalizer, and Google integration. The bells and whistles offered are worth a look, especially as BlueHost has built their own datacenter and servers, but it’s in looking past the specifications that BlueHost distances itself from the rest of the pack.

Small businesses, weary of the conglomerate feel of so many hosting giants like GoDaddy, will appreciate the personal feel BlueHost brings to the table. Consistently, phone calls to BlueHost are answered in literal seconds by knowledgeable account reps. Customer service continues that personal appeal in follow up phone calls and emails. Traditional wait times offered by the largest hosting services often exceed ten minutes. BlueHost sets itself apart with customer support handled in-house, leaving long wait times to the competition, instead replacing it with a much more personal feel.

Where usability is concerned, much like technical specifications, BlueHost sticks with the pack. BlueHost employs the industry standard cPanel hosting control seen in other web hosting services like GoDaddy. Ease of use is near even between BlueHost and the rest of the pack, with a slight edge to BlueHost in light of its educational tools and options for long term development flexibility. The former includes a litany of step-by-step guides and how-to videos for both the novice user and development pro.

Pricing with BlueHost remains a mixed bag. On the one hand, the monthly fee is locked in at a very reasonable $3.95 monthly, not changing month-to-month as some web hosts are inclined to do. On the other hand is the up-front payment plan, requiring an initial lump sum. This latter note may cause some small business owners to pause. In the end, though, it represents a small issue to those with the relatively low capital requirement compared to the tools and personalized services available.

Industry standard tools and technical specs keep BlueHost in line with the competition. Above average customer support and in-house servers and data centers set it apart. For small businesses willing to stomach an upfront fee, Bluehost sets itself up to be the web hosting service that offers what so many others don’t: a personal experience.
