Avast! is one of the best free antivirus software suites available today. It has several different versions, both paid and free, with a host of additional features available for paying subscribers. The free version offers complete virus protection, and the coverage only goes up from there.

Avast! Pro offers the ability to run programs and surf the web virtually through a sandbox mode, and offers several real time shields that protect your system dynamically. This includes various P2P shields, active browsing shields and a WebRep system that displays reputation information for websites you visit.

Virus Bulletin, a site that tests antivirus software for it’s effectiveness, rates Avast! with a VB100. This rating means it has been verified to protect against virtually any virus.

Best of all, Avast! is incredibly easy to set up. Not only does it set a system restore point to allow you to revert any changes just in case, it immediately runs a scan to ensure your system is secure as soon as the program is installed.

Avast! keeps itself in the background. Aside from the occasional window reminding free users to upgrade or paid users to keep their subscription up to date, Avast! is hands-free. You can change which shields are active at any time with a minimum of hassle.

Features

Avast! at any pay level fully protects your system against viruses and malware. Virus protection is happens with a real time shield, active file scans upon download and scans of websites to ensure there’s nothing trying to infect your system.

Avast! scans files when you download them, and you can at any time choose to scan a file for infections. Avast! adds a right-click context menu to your system to allow you to scan anything at any time.

Avast! keeps itself up to date at all times. As long as you’re connected to the Internet, it’s streaming updates. This means you’re always protected from the latest virus threats as soon as the company discovers them.

One of the best features of Avast! is the sandbox it makes available to its users. If you have an application that you don’t trust or that you think may be infected, you can run it in the sandbox. This is an isolated virtual environment that runs the program but does not allow it to do any damage. By default, your browser will run in this environment, allowing Avast! to keep track of your browsing and block any incoming threats.

Avast! WebRep is a browser add-on that leverages the power of the community to assign reputations to various websites. It informs you as you browse if a website you’re visiting is held in high regard or if it is known to host malicious code. Not only does this toolbar include an icon showing you the reputation of the site you’re on, but it also integrates with search engine results. Next to each result on a Google search page, the icon is shown for that site.

Support

Avast! has plenty of built-in support. It comes with a built-in FAQ for home troubleshooting. If that’s not enough, there is a complete user manual available for download through the program or the website. If you can’t solve a problem yourself, there’s a community forum for peer troubleshooting.

In the worst case scenarios, you can trigger remote assistance. With a few simple clicks, you can generate a custom support package for yourself. You send Avast! some information when you do this, including basic computer information, log files and minidumps. This information is sent to a dedicated support specialist who is then able to help you troubleshoot your specific problem.

Conclusion

Avast! is one of the best free antivirus suites available, and the pro upgrade is even better. The real-time shields and WebRep application ensure you can’t infect yourself even if you want to. If you do manage to get your computer infected, Avast! support is excellent and fully capable of solving the problem for you. Best of all, everything is hands-free. Avast! Antivirus protects at all times without needing to be activated. Aside from a yearly renewal of your subscription, you don’t have to do anything to keep your program up to date.
