Improving Your Weekday Morning Routine

Whether you’re a night owl or a morning person, establishing a morning routine can improve not only the start of your day but power you through a productive afternoon and evening. For many individuals the challenge to these new routines is the time they take to employ; as a result this article is focused on small changes that even the busiest individuals can incorporate each morning.

Develop a Stretching Routine

One of the first things you can do to prime not only your body but also your mind for the day ahead is to quickly get in a stretch. While the thought of stretching can often be overwhelming, conjuring images of a master yogi able to bend themselves over backwards, just taking a few moments to prime your muscles for the day ahead can pay significant dividends not only that day but also over time. Stretching can take anywhere from a few seconds to an hour long yoga circuit, but a fantastic option for most of us can be found in this video from Max Shank. In just five minutes you’re able to jump-start your morning and get your body and mind ready for the day ahead.

Drink a Large Glass of Water

For those caffeine and coffee addicts, the morning beverage routine is fairly locked in. However whether you currently start your day off with a cup of coffee or not, you can supercharge your morning by first drinking a 16oz glass of water. While a small step, providing your body with the rehydration it so desperately needs gives you a chance to get ahead of the curve and kick start normal body functions. Recently studies have shown that even mild dehydration can impact your mood and ability to concentrate, the 16oz of water gives your body a chance to rehydrate after the night’s sleep and ensures you’ll be better prepared to tackle the day ahead.

Review Your Goals for the Day

Before you leave your bedroom, pause and take a moment to reflect on what your major goals are for the day.  This brief moment where you focus on these goals provides you a chance to address the must do and would like to do’s for the day. Committing to yourself what specific items you will accomplish before the day ends can help prevent items from slipping under the radar once the distractions of the day set in.

Avoid checking your email/social media accounts

As our smart devices continue to play a larger and larger role in our lives, it often seems impossible to begin one’s day without reviewing all that you missed while you were asleep. To improve your daily morning routine, attempt to avoid engaging with your email or social media accounts until all of the steps above have been accomplished. While the steps above take less than 10 minutes a day, you will be amazed and how employing them before engaging with your smart device can actually save you time each morning. While you are not aiming to emulate Ron Swanson, you are looking to avoid the trap of Tom Haverford.
